With the recent decline in interest in the ClanBase EuroCup, the ESL Major Series has emerged as one of the premier online tournaments for Call of Duty 4, this season boasting a €1,500 prize purse. The likes of fnatic, Dignitas and TEK9 are all participating and, following a lengthy qualification period, the group stages are underway.

Week 1 throws up a number of interesting ties with each group looking very competitive. CDC4 champions fnatic face Finnish rivals teamxeq in Group A but have tougher tests ahead, with the likes of Speedlink and Epsilon looking to challenge the Swedes for the top spot. Group D is perhaps even tougher, with SK, LowLandLions and Roskilde all considered favourites. The Ravens will be looking to regroup after their recent poor form in the EuroCup but will face stiff resistance not just from the aforementioned pair, but also from underdogs UF-Gaming and Team-Impact.

Three teams from each group will progress but the second and third placed teams will have to face off in a relegation playoff to make it through to the next stage, making first place an even more important goal. Matches are played on one map - this week mp_crash - using the standard MR12 format.
